Embracing Change… My New Superpower?

I had never cried in front of a teacher before. That was until my sixth-grade teacher, Mrs. Allen suggested I transfer to a more advanced math class. Seeing as it was mid-school year, I was devastated by the thought of leaving the friendships, routines, and sense of belonging I had already created. Overwhelmed, I begged her to let me stay as the tears fell uncontrollably.

But soon after, the “what-ifs” lingered in my mind. I regretted not challenging myself to explore the discomfort. My inability to view change as a positive opportunity had prevented me from excelling academically.

As I entered high school, I sought to overcome my fear of change by deliberately welcoming opportunities. In my freshman year project, Infotainment, I interviewed for assistant director in our Star Wars play about human rights. To my surprise, I was asked to take the director role instead, a much greater responsibility. While I initially hesitated, I decided to go for it. This experience enriched my skills as a leader and boosted my quick thinking. My reluctance to change had faulted me before, but this time I took control and it paid off.

Later, I participated in a virtual entrepreneurship program. While I didn’t win the final pitch competition, the hosts offered me a weekly 10-hour paid mentorship, working virtually with their Singapore-based team. It would require me to shift my schedule and push my abilities. But through that experience, I met lifelong mentors and learned to work within another culture.

Flash forward to freshman year of college, I wasn’t completely content with my choice. Since I’d already built relationships with professors and friends, I brushed off any potential for change. But, I remembered Mrs. Allen and my dedication to becoming more receptive to change. So, I finished the year strong and devised a plan to reach my goal: transferring to a UC. While I’d need to overload units and enroll in summer courses at my local community college, I felt enthusiastic about what change could bring. Learning to embrace change has become my superpower, unveiling new opportunities and valuable experiences.
